THE GOSPEL OF JOHN SECTION D 13:1-17:25

4. They therefore led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was (still) early in the morning. They did not actually go into the Praetorium in case they should be defiled and so be unable to eat the Passover (meal). Pilate therefore went outside to them and says "What accusation do you bring against this man?" They answered and said to him "If this man was not doing evil would we have brought him to you?" Pilate therefore said to them "You take him and judge him according to your own law." The Jews said to him. "It is not lawful for us to kill someone." (This was so) that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled when he spoke and signified by what death he was about to die. Pilate therefore went back into the Praetorium and called Jesus and said to him "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered "Are you saying this from yourself or according to what others have told you about me?" Plate answered "Do you think I am a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What did you do?" Jesus answered "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom was of this world my attendants would have fought to prevent my being delivered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not here." Pilate therefore said to him "Are you not really a king then?" Jesus answered "You say that I am a king. I have been born for this. I have come into the world for this, Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice." Pilate says to him "What is truth?" And, having said this he again went forth to the Jews and tells them "I do not find any crime in him. But there is a custom that I should release to you one (prisoner) at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release the king of the Jews to you?" They therefore cried out again saying "Not this man but Barabbas." Barabbas was a robber. 18:28-40
