As it happened, there was a man called Joseph who was a councillor. He was a good and righteous man. He did not agree with the council and what they had done. He came from Arimathea, a Jewish city, which was waiting for the kingdom of God. This man approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Taking it down he wrapped it in linen and placed him in a tomb which was hewn from stone. Nobody had as yet been laid there. It was preparation day and a Sabbath day was coming on. The women who had come from Galilee with (Jesus) were following behind. They saw the tomb and how his body was placed there. Returning (back to their base) they prepared spices and ointment. On the

Sabbath they rested according to the requirement of the commandment. But on the first day of the week, while it was still very early they came to the tomb carrying the spices which they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. Entering in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. They were perplexed about this. Then behold there were two men standing by them in shining clothing. They were terrified and bent down with their faces to the ground. They (the two men) said to them. "Why are you looking for the one who is alive amongst those who are dead?" He is not here but has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while still in Galilee saying "It behoves the Son of man to be

delivered into the hands of sinful men to be crucified. On the third day he will rise again." They (the women) remembered his words. Returning from the tomb they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now these women were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James as well as others. They came and told the apostles these things but it seemed to them (the apostles) that these words were folly and they disbelieved them (the women).
(verse 12 in some ancient texts says) - But Peter went running to the tomb. He bent down and saw the binding cloths but nothing else. Then he went back home, amazed at what had happened.)
